The Fine Art of Kathryn Walker

Lampwork Beads

Kathryn has been experimenting with making her own lampwork beads for a few years now, and just recently felt good enough to include them into her jewelry. The process is interesting and the possibilities, endless!
Lampwork beads are handmade beads, made one at a time by winding plain or patterned molten glass, heated with controllable intense heat around a rod or “mandrel”. This intense heat is often produced by a blow torch, which is what she uses. The glass in a molten state, may be formed into endless decorative, patterned, layered, colored and sized beads. No two beads will ever be exactly alike and the variation is limited only by the boundaries of each artist. Being someone who is inspired by color and original design, Kathryn has come to absolutely love lampwork beads and the beautiful jewelry they can become!
